Why forty is the certificate birthday

Forty sits in an odd spot. It is old enough to be a milestone and young enough that nobody wants sympathy about it. That is exactly the gap a joke certificate fills: it marks the moment without treating it as a decline.

It also solves the standard fortieth problem. The person has been buying their own things for two decades, so the winning gift is one that cannot be bought, only made for them.

Entitlement lines to fill the body

Three to five of these, no more:

• The holder is now permitted to leave any social event at 10pm without explanation.
• Complaints about your back are hereby reclassified as valid contributions to conversation.
• The holder retains the right to say "in my day" exactly twice per calendar year.
• All obligations to pretend to enjoy loud venues are formally discharged.
• The holder is entitled to one unquestioned nap per weekend afternoon.

The jokes to leave out

Three categories reliably land badly at a fortieth, and they are the three most templates lead with.

Death jokes. "Over the hill", coffins, tombstones and RIP wording were funny in about 1994 and now mostly land as bleak in a room that includes the person's parents.

Body and appearance jokes. Grey hair, weight, wrinkles. There is always someone in the room who is sensitive about exactly that thing, and it is often the recipient.

Money and career jokes. Forty is the age at which people compare themselves to their peers. Aim at habits and personality instead, which is where the affection is anyway.

Presenting it so it becomes a keepsake

Read it aloud. The mock-formal wording only works out loud, and reading it turns a piece of paper into the moment everyone remembers from the evening.

Frame it before you give it. An unframed certificate goes in a drawer; a framed one goes on a wall. A cheap A4 frame roughly doubles the odds that the gift survives the year.

Get the name and date exactly right, in large type. That detail is the entire reason it feels personal rather than printed.
